Originally from Illinois, Tia graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in 1990. Tia moved to Florida, and attended law school at Nova Southeastern Law School, graduating with her Juris Doctorate in 1994. After graduating, she served as an Assistant State Attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit for nearly ten years. She handled misdemeanor cases, juvenile cases and felony cases.
During her time as a prosecutor, Tia was on the Domestic Violence Task Force. The rights of victims and families were of paramount concern.
In July, 2003, Tia began her own legal practice, focusing on family law. The transition from prosecutor to family lawyer was seamless. Her past jury trial experience gained as a prosecutor was invaluable for use in the family law courts to advocate for her clients.
From 2012 to 2013, Tia was the co-chair of the Sarasota County Bar Association Family Law Section. In addition to being a member of the Florida Bar, Tia has also been a member of the Sarasota County Bar Association and the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar and Sarasota Bar since 2004.
In February 2014, Tia became Collaborative Law trained. Collaborative Family Law provided families a more peaceful and cost effective solution to the court system. Tia is a proud member of Next Generation Divorce, and currently serves as a board member.
Every year since beginning private practice, Tia has continued to maintain the high level of education her clients have come to expect by attending more classes than as required by the Florida Bar. Family law statutes and procedures keep evolving. Tia strives to have the latest and best information and case law to best advise her clients and educate families.
As for community participation outside of the law, Tia is currently on the board for Samaritan Counseling of the Gulf Coast, Inc., which is a non-profit organization providing mental health counseling for individuals and families. Also, Tia has taught in the Sarasota County School system.
Tia serves in a pro bono capacity as an attorney ad litem for children, and as a guardian ad litem. The courts appoint her to represent children, either as an attorney or as a guardian. Tia also has been hired in a private capacity representing children’s best interests as a guardian ad litem and as an attorney ad litem.
Tia is a Supreme Court Certified Mediator in Family Law, and she is a Qualified Parenting Coordinator for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit.
Tia is married to a retired police officer and she has two adult sons from a previous marriage. Mrs. Jensen’s (formerly known as “Werdell”) interests include running, triathlons, martial arts and weight lifting.
